In this short video we're delighted to introduce our forthcoming publication, 'Achieving sustainable production of sheep', edited by Professor Johan Greyling, Head of the Department of Animal, Welfare and Grassland Science at the University of the Free State, South Africa .
Our new publication covers topics such as animal nutrition, genetics and breeding and is tipped to be ''almost encyclopaedic in its coverage and includes the cream of the world's animal scientists specifically with expertise in sheep farming''.
Learn more about the book in Francis' latest video.
It seems this is a busy time of year for the egg and poultry industry, with at least five different conferences in this subject taking place over the last couple of months.
We're delighted to be bringing you further information on our upcoming publication, 'Achieving sustainable production of eggs (Volumes 1 & 2)', edited by Professor Julie Roberts. Francis discusses topics covered in the books and how they aim to challenge the key issues in livestock production, which you can watch in the video.
October 2016
Next week sees the start of the IDF World Dairy Summit in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The six day long event will be sharing knowledge and important updates on the dairy industry, which we're looking forward to hearing about. We're also delighted to announce that Nico van Belzen, Director General of the IDF and editor of our upcoming publications 'Achieving sustainable cultivation of milk, Volumes 1 and 2', will be in attendance.
For more information about these titles and volume 3 edited by Professor John Webster, watch the video below or visit the online bookshop

What does this mean for livestock production? Let’s start with its importance in agriculture. It has been estimated by the FAO and others that the livestock sector:
Supports over 1 billion people
Accounts for 40% of global agricultural gross domestic product (GDP)
Provides over 33% of the world’s protein intake
The size and rapid growth of the sector means that livestock production requires significant resources:
It occupies 30% of the world’s land surface and 70% of all agricultural land (primarily in the cultivation of feed crops such as cereals and soybean used to feed cattle, particularly in the developed world)
It accounts for over 8% of global water use (mainly irrigation for feed crops)
Livestock feed accounts for over 35% of overall cereal use with cattle consuming over 1 billion tons of grain each year
It is also contributes significantly to the emissions driving climate change. It has been estimated that livestock production contributes:
14.5% of overall greenhouse emissions
Significant amounts of particular gases (9% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions; 37% of anthropogenic methane emissions; 65% of anthropogenic nitrogen emissions; and 66% of anthropogenic ammonia emissions)
Wider environmental problems include the degradation of grazing land due to problems such as overgrazing as well as pollution from animal wastes, veterinary residues, and runoff from pesticides/fertilisers used to grow feed crops
The solution
So – what can be done to make livestock production ‘climate-smart’? Solutions include:
Breeding more productive animals
Improving diets so that animals produce more protein with less feed and lower emissions
Better manure management (e.g. composting)
Better herd management to improve output, including better herd health management with less reliance on antibiotics
Better management of grassland (e.g. sowing improved varieties of pasture, rotational grazing)
These issues are addressed in our forthcoming titles:
